Are Award Shows for Losers?

This piece was penned by Prentice Mathew, a senior art director. In the current annual fervor of Cannes, he claims “advertising awards are now for losers.” You might agree. You might find it heresy. Either way, it’s an interesting read. Anyone agree? Disagree? (And is it easier to agree or disagree based on how many awards you won this year?)

The Competition

If you’ve ever had the opportunity to attend a major advertising award show like Cannes or One Show,┬áthe amount of good work on display can be overwhelming. For my competitions class that I sometimes teach, I tell my students to imagine a football field. That football field is filled with print campaigns. Now put a few judges walking around that field. Will they stop at yours? How will it stand out?
